在英语中，表示倍数增加的结构有多种，一般均可译成“增加（n-1）倍”或“增加到n倍”等，没有什么问题（请参阅《世界科学》1983年第三期及第四期分载的“英语中关于倍数增减等的表达法”一文——编者）。

① Natural gas takes up 600 times less space when it is liquefied. 液化后的天然气所占的空间仅为原来的1/600。

② A is shortened four times as long as B. A比B缩短了 3/4。

③ Aluminium is almost more than three times as light as copper. 铝几乎比铜轻 2/3 强。（或：铝的重量几乎为铜的1/3弱。）

④ The collector series resistance is reduced by a factor of 5. 集电极串联电阻降低了 4/5。（或：……降低到1/5。）

⑤ The principal advantage over the old-fashioned machine is a four-fold reduction in weight. 与旧式机器相比，其主要优点是重量轻3/4。

以上例句中的倍数均无小数点。对于带有小数点的倍数，须改换译法。比如reduce3. 5 times不宜译为“减少到三点五分之一”，因这不符合汉语习惯。在此场合，可进一步换算成不带小数点的分数，即

对以上介绍的几种译法，即使是主张把increase by three times译为“增加三倍”（笔者认为应译为“增加两倍”），把three times larger译为“大三倍”（笔者认为应译为“大两倍”）的人，大多数似乎也表示同意。下例的译文似欠妥当或错误的：

① The largest effect，that of the nitro group，decreases the racemization rate tenfold. 最大的作用是硝基的作用， 它减慢外消旋化率10倍（ 田向国及陈达编：《科技英语翻译概要》，1981年，第 45页）。〔应译为“……9/10”或“……到1 /10。”〕

② Neopentyl acetate is hydrolyzed 5. 7 times more slowly than ethyl acetate. 乙酸新戊酯的水解要比乙酸乙酯慢5 . 7 倍（ 同书同页） 。（应译为 “……慢47/57”，或“……慢到10/57”，或“……慢 82. 46%”，或“……慢到17. 54%”。）

③ Aluminium is approximately 3. 5 times lighter than copper. 铝的重量约比铜轻3. 5倍（吴慰曾编著：《英汉科技常用短语词典》，1980年，第497页）。〔应译为“铝约比铜轻5/7（或71. 43%）”或“铝的重量约为铜的2/7（或28. 57%）。”〕

④ This kind of film is twice thinner than ordinary paper. 这种薄膜的厚度只及普通纸的三分之一（阎庆甲编著：《科技英语翻译方法》，1981年，第81）。〔应译为“……的一半（或1/2）”。〕
